Another study conducted within this framework was a study on the gemachim phenomenon in the haredi community.

The gemachim industry, which stands at the heart of the intra-haredi economy, presents a fascinating economic model. Though largely unknown to the Israeli public, it is relevant to the academic community as well, which in recent years has taken an interest in alternative social and cooperative economic models.

Of late, however, many regulatory bodies (such as the Bank of Israel, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Justice) wish to regulate the Gemachim’s activities and bring them under the same regulations and supervision as other financial entities (currency service providers).

The Institute has initiated a paper whose purpose is to enable decision makers to better understand the gemachim phenomenon, for the purpose of regulation and future arrangements. Research in this field is expected to yield additional publications that will inform the relevant academic discourse and the general public.
